Rat’s Collection of Candy Corn Creations

I love candy corn. It might not be the most flavorful of candies (after all, it’s mostly corn syrup and dye), but its signature shape and colors are a signal that Halloween is right around the corner. However, I have had to make some dietary changes and reduce my sugar intake in the last year, which means I can no longer have my favorite Halloween sweet. What is this sugar-obsessed rat to do? Make a menagerie of candy corn themed amigurumi, of course! So, sit back and join me on my journey with this amigurumi obsession.

My first creatures came about last month in response to K Hook Creations‘s Crochet Along for her No-Sew Octopus. I was unable to participate during the live stream due to it being during my working hours, but seeing other people’s creations inspired me to put my own twist on the pattern. I completed the octo with the yellow top in September for the crochet-along and completed its sibling a couple weeks later. I’ve figured out their names are Candice and Cornelia, but they won’t tell me who is who yet.

For this next one, I was fortunate enough to be able to test CafĂ© del Craft‘s Pumpkin Spice Latte pattern. While I was making my test, I knew I wanted to make another one with candy corn colors, so I plotted this one out in a night and made it shortly after. I am thrilled with how it turned out – especially how the stripes on the handle match the ones on the body of the mug!

Soon after making the latte, I was compelled to create a candy corn inspired snail for Sotacrafter‘s Snail Project, using the Stip & Haak Slakje Sofie pattern (translated into English via Google). It didn’t quite turn out the way I envisioned, but it’s still very cute – it’s been a favorite at the office. This one was given away with other Halloween themed snails in Sotacrafter’s Snail Auction 10/20/19.

By now, I’ve become known as the hedgehog lady, and amazingly enough, after crocheting over forty of them, I still enjoy making them! So, naturally, I had to make a candy corn themed one. As before, I used the delightful Diddy Hedgehog pattern by Crochet Stitch Witch. This one is another favorite at the office.

Though I’m not a rabid fan of Adventure Time, I do enjoy the bizarre setting and creative character designs. This amigurumi is based off of Science, Princess Bubblegum’s candy corn rat, who saves the day when the Candy Kingdom falls prey to a zombie plague. For the body and ears, I followed the Science the Candy Corn Rat pattern from Pops de Milk. To match the character’s noodly limbs on the show, I made them from knitted i-cords.

Finally, I felt this collection wouldn’t be complete without making an actual candy corn. After a brief Ravelry search, I found Nifty Knitter Designs’s variation on an out-of-print pattern by Crafty Alien. The pattern works up super quickly and with such a satisfying result, I’m tempted to make a whole basket of them before the end of the month!

While making this collection of softies didn’t satisfy any sugar cravings, it definitely got me into the Halloween spirit and I’m happy to be able to share it with all of you. Now… what do I do when peppermint season is upon us?

Humbled. Elated. Overwhelmed.

I promised that I would have a blog post up last week, but as you know, that didn’t come to pass.

“Why?” you ask.

Because I have been crocheting hedgehogs and processing orders almost non-stop since I opened the hedgehog sale.

When I started this, my hopes were high, but my expectations were low. I thought I would be lucky to sell twenty hedgehogs in two weeks. I surpassed that in two days. Even with little promotion after the initial push, at this moment I have sold over 85 percent of this limited run.

I am blown away by all the support I have received the past couple weeks. All the adoptions, donations, shares, and words of encouragement have meant so much. Additionally, this Tuesday I got the amazing news from my dentist that she will be writing off the portion of the bill that would have been billed to my insurance for my last procedure. That is over $700. You all have restored my belief in human kindness.

My hands are sore and I’m exhausted, but I am so grateful.

There are still a few hedgehogs in Wheat and Rose available through Sunday. Click here for the adoption form and share with your friends if you can. Update: Sold out! Thank you!

I’m hoping to start on a regular blog schedule starting next week, with a piece on crafting for accessibility. After that, I’ll be focusing mostly on knit and crochet amigurumi, starting off with a quick side by side comparison of the two fiber crafts.

Thank you all again for all the support and I will be back soon.

The Start of Something New

Almost as long as I have been knitting and crocheting, I have wanted to have a craft blog. However, it was never the right time. There would be work, school, a death in the family, a serious injury… something always came up.

And then, last week, I had a crazy idea: Why don’t I just start it now? So, here we are.

Here is what I hope to share with you all on this blog:

  • Progress photos of various projects and insights into my creative process
  • Detailed explanations and diagrams of various technical aspects of knitting and crochet, especially in regards to amigurumi
  • Artistic concepts to aid in getting the details of your pieces just right
  • Other craft obsessions of mine, including origami and duct tape
  • The crazy antics of the felines who own me

Thank you for joining me on this journey. The right time is now. Stay tuned for more of my crazy ideas. 🙂
