Warning: the following passage contains descriptions of injury, medical treatment, and dental procedures.

The date was May 7th. My bus schedule app said my bus home was running early, so I was running. I needed to catch the light. Toward the end of the block, I tripped on a metal plate. Next thing I knew, my face was on the pavement. My front teeth were broken. My lip was bleeding. A stranger on a bicycle came to my aid and sat with me while I composed myself and called an Uber to go to the Emergency Room. Then he helped me into the car.

I spent five hours in the ER that night. I had five stitches sewn into my lip and had my broken teeth splinted so they would stay in my mouth. Over the next few weeks, I had several dental appointments, including three root canals, three temporary composite fillings, and removal of the splint. My teeth are still very tender and I have not been able to bite using my upper incisors for over a month.

Luckily, I have dental insurance, but they have a limit on how much they will cover. My insurance ran out after the second root canal and I had to pay for the last two procedures in full. The current total is over $2500 and will increase when I get my permanent crowns.

A coworker suggested I make a GoFundMe page to help cover the costs. I thought hard about it, but ultimately decided it wasn’t for me. Then I had another idea of how to raise the money. I would do something I had never done before: I would sell my amigurumi.

Starting today and through the end of June, I will be selling hedgehog amigurumi. This will be a limited run of up to 40 toys, 10 each of four different colors: chocolate, toast, wheat, and rose.

Why hedgehogs? Firstly, they are adorable. Secondly, I was inspired while watching the documentary, Year of the Hedgehog, which showcases the life cycle and environment of wild European hedgehogs over the course of a year. Since hedgehogs are not native to North America, I didn’t know much about them before hand. Being able to see their spirited and inquisitive natures during their long journey through the year gave me a much greater appreciation and understanding for this surprisingly tenacious species.

The crochet hedgehogs are lovingly handmade from a pattern by Sarah Lyons in a pet friendly home. They are made from acrylic yarn, polyester stuffing, and plastic safety eyes. Due to their handmade nature, each hedgehog will be slightly different. This toy is suitable for humans and human-like beings ages 3 and up.

Each hedgehog costs $20 + shipping. If you are in the Seattle area, you may request a local pickup (King County only, please). The first shipment will be sent out Saturday, June 22nd, and the second shipment will be sent Saturday, June 29th.
